It’s A Beautiful Day

Although most graduation ceremonies were canceled this year, virtual commencements abounded. One of the most prominent was organized by YouTube.

The YouTube special featured Barack and Michelle Obama, who delivered the commencement address and served as hosts. It also included appearances from a flute-playing Lizzo, the New York Philharmonic, Alicia Keys, The Simpsons, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. And those appearances were all in the first 20 minutes or so — in true commencement fashion, the whole special ran nearly five hours.

One of the most uplifting performances (at least in the first 20 minutes) was a superstar choir performing U2’s “Beautiful Day.” The song is introduced by Bono, who (weirdly) doesn’t sing his own song but does give an inspirational message about America being an idea that still has the power to change the world for the better.

Bono and U2, of course, have matched their words with action, and that remains true today. The band’s drummer, Larry Mullen Jr., recently donated $100,000 to Irish relief efforts for the Navajo Nation.

Hopefully, this makes your day a little more beautiful.
